Top Candle Making Problems & How to Fix Them


Making candles looks pretty simple from the outside. Melt your wax, add fragrance, pour it into a vessel, add a wick—and you're done, right?

Well… not exactly. 😂

One of the biggest things I've learned through candle making is that the finished candle is only part of the process. A candle can look absolutely beautiful and still have problems once you light it.

From tunneling and mushrooming wicks to weak fragrance and uneven burns, candle making comes with a learning curve. And honestly, some of the best lessons I've learned have come from candles that didn't behave the way I expected them to.

So if you're making candles at home, just getting started, or wondering why your candle isn't burning the way you thought it would, here are some of the most common candle-making problems and what you can do about them.

1. Why Is My Candle Tunneling?

Tunneling happens when your candle burns down the center while leaving a significant amount of unmelted wax around the sides of the vessel.

One of the most common causes is an improperly sized wick.

If your wick isn't producing enough heat to create a full melt pool, the wax may continue to burn straight down instead of melting across the entire surface.

But here's the tricky part: a wick that's too large can create problems too.

That's why wick testing is such an important part of candle making. You can't always choose a wick based on the size of your vessel alone. Wax type, fragrance oil, fragrance load, vessel diameter, and even the type of wick you're using can all affect how your candle burns.

Tip: Don't judge a candle's performance based on appearance alone. Burn testing is essential.

2. Why Is My Wick Mushrooming?

Ever light your candle and notice a little “mushroom” forming at the top of the wick?

That's called mushrooming, and it happens when carbon and other combustion byproducts build up on the end of the wick.

Some mushrooming can happen during a normal burn, but excessive mushrooming can be a sign that your wick isn't burning cleanly for that particular candle formula.

And this is exactly why I test my candles.

The same wick that performs beautifully in one combination of wax, fragrance, and vessel may behave completely differently in another.

Tip: Trim your wick before each burn and pay attention to how it behaves throughout the entire burn test.

3. Why Is My Candle Smoking?

If your candle is producing visible smoke, don't immediately assume something is wrong with your wax.

Your wick could be the culprit.

A wick that's too long, too large, or producing a flame that's too aggressive can create excess soot and smoke.

That's another reason why wick trimming matters. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to the recommended length for your candle and keep an eye on the flame.

If you're consistently seeing excessive smoke even with proper wick trimming, it's worth reevaluating your wick choice and overall candle formula.

4. Why Can't I Smell My Candle?

This is one of the most frustrating candle problems—especially when your candle smells amazing cold but seems almost scentless when it's burning.

There are several things that can affect fragrance performance, including:

  • The type of wax you're using
  • Fragrance oil quality
  • Fragrance load
  • Wick selection
  • Cure time
  • Candle size and vessel
  • The size of the room

And this is why more fragrance oil doesn't automatically mean more fragrance.

Every wax has a maximum fragrance load, and going beyond what your wax can properly hold isn't the solution to a weak-smelling candle.

Sometimes the answer is simply giving the candle enough time to cure or testing a different fragrance or wick combination.

5. Why Does My Candle Have Wet Spots?

Those strange-looking patches on the side of a container candle are often called wet spots.

They can make it look like your wax isn't sticking properly to the vessel, even though the candle may still burn perfectly well.

Wet spots can happen because of changes in temperature and how the wax contracts as it cools.

The frustrating part?

Sometimes you can do everything “right” and still get them.

Temperature, pouring conditions, cooling speed, and the vessel itself can all play a role.

So while there are techniques that can help reduce them, wet spots aren't necessarily an indication that your candle is unsafe or unusable.

6. Why Does My Candle Need to Cure?

This is one I wish more new candle makers knew about.

You don't necessarily want to make a candle today and immediately judge its fragrance performance tomorrow.

Curing gives the wax and fragrance time to properly bind and develop.

The amount of time needed can vary depending on the wax and fragrance you're using, but patience can make a noticeable difference in how a candle performs.

And trust me—waiting is hard. 😂

Especially when you've just made a beautiful candle and want to light it immediately.

But if you're testing your candles, give them the appropriate cure time before making final judgments about fragrance performance.

7. Why Is My Candle Burning Too Hot?

A candle that produces an extremely large flame, excessive heat, or an unusually deep melt pool may be using a wick that's too large for the formula.

Bigger isn't always better when it comes to candle wicks.

Your goal isn't to create the biggest flame possible. You're looking for a controlled, consistent burn that creates an appropriate melt pool without excessive heat, soot, or other issues.

This is another reason why wick testing is so important.

8. The Biggest Candle-Making Tip I Can Give You: TEST EVERYTHING

If there's one thing I would tell anyone getting into candle making, it's this:

Don't assume. Test.

Don't assume the wick that worked in one candle will work in another.

Don't assume a fragrance oil will perform exactly like the last one you used.

Don't assume a candle is ready just because it looks beautiful.

And definitely don't assume that one successful candle means you've figured out the formula forever.

Every combination of wax, fragrance, wick, vessel, and fragrance load can behave differently.

That's part of what makes candle making so interesting—and sometimes so frustrating. 😂

I've had candles teach me lessons I definitely wasn't expecting to learn, but that's also how you get better.

Final Thoughts

Candle making is a lot more than melting wax and pouring it into a pretty vessel.

It's testing, troubleshooting, adjusting, waiting, and sometimes making the same candle more than once until you get it right.

And honestly? That's part of the fun.

Every “problem” is another opportunity to learn something about your materials and your process.

So if your first candle doesn't burn perfectly, don't give up.

Take notes. Make an adjustment. Test again.

That's how you make a better candle—and become a better candle maker.
